The dangers of drug and alcohol abuse to our children and youth today is unprecidented. Terrifying drugs like Methamphetamine, Heroin, and Fentanyl are readily available in our communities to our children and youth. With the increase of drug trafficking into Alaska, and drug dealers that peddal poison to our children through the use of social media and other technology, the incidence of drug abuse among young people is skyrocketing.
Our children need the nessary tools and knowledge to make good decisions when confronted with the temptations of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and other dangers in our society.

According to Amercial Health Rankings, a division of Unit5ed Health Foundation, 9.8% of youth (ages 12-17) in Alaska report to have used illicit drugs, including marijuana in the last month.*

D.A.R.E. America (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was created in 1983 in Los Angeles, CA to educate children on the dangers of drug use. D.A.R.E America through its partner (D.A.R.E. Alaska) offers programs that provide children with tools to avoid drugs, gangs and violence.
In Kenai and throughout Alaska, Police Officers from sponsoring departments, team up with shcools, parents, and the community to provide D.A.R.E. education to elementary, Jr. High, and High School age students to help our youth make safe choices and avoid the dangers of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, bullying, and gang violence.
These programs are vital for public safety. Statistics show that one dollar spent in prevention relating to drugs and alcohol, saves our communities over $50 in responding to the damage that these dangerous substances cause. However most importantly, the investment of time and resources at a young age in our children and youth, saves lives.
